All about the Wolverhampton railway station

Wolverhampton is a bustling city in the West Midlands. It was once considered to be a part of Staffordshire and was popular for producing steel and manufacturing vehicles. Wolverhampton railway station is located in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, United Kingdom. The railway station is served by Avanti West Coast, cross-country, Transport for Wales.

Gateway to Wolverhampton 

The railway station was previously known as Wolverhampton high level. The first one opened on the edge of the town ventre in 1837, on the Grand Junction Railway, later it was named Wednesfield Heath. The present station dates from 1964 to 1967. This is when the high level station was rebuild from scratch as part of the modernisation programme.

Typical weekday operations are as follows:

Avanti West Coast:

1) 1tph to London Euston via Birmingham New Street (more in the morning peak)

2) 1tph to Preston, with services alternating every two hours between Blackpool North and Edinburgh. These start or terminate at  Carlisle or Preston or Lancaster or Crewe during peak hours.

3) 2 trains per day to Shrewbury

London Northwestern Railway:

1) 2tph to Liverpool Lime Street, start/terminating at Crewe or Stafford in the peak hours

2) 2tph to Birmingham New Street most of which continue to London Euston via Northampton.

West Midlands Railway:

1) 4tph to Birmingham New Street, of which two continue to Walsall.

2) 2tph to Shrewbury, one calling all stations, and the other as a limited stop semi-fast express. Sundays are operated as an hourly service stopping at all stations.

CrossCountry:

1) 2tph to  Manchester Piccadilly, via  Stoke on Trent & Macclesfield (a limited service also runs via Crewe)

2) Transport for Wales services between Chester , Shrewbury, Aberystwyth , Holyhead and Birmingham International call at Wolverhampton.

3) 1tp2h to Aberystwyth

4) 1tp2h to   Holyhead via Shrewsbury and Chester

5) 1tph to Birmingham International

Platforms – Public Transport

The station comprises of six platforms. Platforms 1 to 4 are through platforms whereas 5 and 6 are bay platforms.

Platform 1 is used for northbound services

Platform 2 is used northbound and Southbound services

Platform 3 & 4 are for southbound services

Platform 5 is used by local services to Walsall via Birmingham new street.

Platform 6 is usually used for the first service of the day to Shrewsbury and for holding trains when they are not in use.

The second half of the Wolves train station opened for public on Jun 28 2021. After the completion of extension to the station or phase 2, this section is now authorised and comissoned by rail authorities. The railway station has helped local economy create jobs. The station is part of the dramatic transformation taking place under the city’s award-winning £150million Interchange scheme which is delivering improvements to bus, Metro, cycle and train connectivity.

Phase 1 of the station has been open to the public since May last year with train services running. It includes six ticket vending machines, new British Transport Police, toilet, accessibility and baby changing facilities, three retail units ready to be fitted out, train crew accommodation, and a spacious concourse. Phase 2 includes three more retail units ready to be fitted out, as well as a customer lounge and dedicated customer help point.
